This series, Three Peaks and a Valley refers to three positive moments and one negative moment that happens during a twenty-four hour period of my life. When I’m feeling down, my mom tells me to remember one positive and one negative thing about the experience: a peak and a valley.
Three Peaks and a Valley aims to outweigh the negative with the positive.
Three Peaks and a Valley is a regular miniseries that, by sharing my own moments of joy and vulnerability I hope that you’ll think about your own.
PEAK: This Peaks and Valleys is very much centered around my night last night. Around 7 p.m. I got a text from my friend Leah asking me to go to a couple bars with a group of our friends. We met up at another friend’s house at 8 p.m. to hang out a little before going to The Hangar and The Mapleleaf bars downtown. I volunteered to drive everyone, which I love doing because I don’t really like drinking much anyway.
We arrived at the first spot around ten and hung out for an hour in a booth. One of my guy friends ordered a “Dreamsicle” cocktail that smelled exactly like the creamsicle treats that come out around summer time. We picked up another friend on our way to The Mapleleaf across the street, where we arrived around 11 p.m. The same friend who ordered the Dreamsicle was wearing a shirt covered in tessellated cranes, one of those purposely hideous things he picked up on clearance. The bouncer checking IDs out front made a funny comment about it. I’m sure that if the bouncer doesn’t have his own tessellated crane shirt, he will likely be on the hunt for one soon.
PEAK: My outfit and makeup were pretty killer. I went with a graphic double liner and cut crease, with minor contouring and a Revlon lipstick in Sassy Mauve. I wore a black T-shirt and jean jacket with a pair of printed shorts and sandals. It was a casual outfit choice compared to what the others were wearing but I was comfortable.
PEAK: I dropped my friends off at about 1 in the morning and drove around for a little while since I was sober. I stumbled across a great radio station playing this song, Blue Velvet. I had heard the Lana Del Rey version but never the original. It was great. I took the back roads home and drove with the windows down.
VALLEY: While my night was great, my late afternoon was not so great. I was exhausted from getting up early so I took a nap for a little bit, resulting in one of the worst dreams I’ve ever had. I woke up in a panic and sat on the floor of the shower for a while with the water pounding over me until I got it out of my head.
